[Upcoming Class] Plant the seed of selling NOW
Everything we get to experience today is the result of the sum of the moments of the past.
When I left Korea in January my mom gave me a cool gift: a calendar with seasonal ingredients for that month. I always was interested in eating more seasonal things but with advancements in farming technology and global markets, I couldn’t really tell what was truly in season or not. With the calendar I’ve been having a lot of success with fruits.
Take the strawberry for example.
It takes about 2-3 months to harvest if the plant is established, 5-6 months if not. Geez, and I thought baking was time consuming. Imagine feeling like strawberries and having to wait months or almost a year to get the sweet taste of one. But thanks to the farmers who diligently grew the berries even when we weren’t thinking about them, we get to enjoy strawberries whenever we want.
Unfortunately the harvest isn’t just for fruits. All of the explosive events of late are all results of tensions that have been slowly escalating over the past years. This isn’t hard to see when we think of our own life.
When you have intense hatred for someone, it doesn’t instantly occur. It usually boils up over a period of time. The more time you spend with them, the more you notice their flaws like how they chew or how they always dismiss other people. And the more you notice this, the more it pronounces itself like a sore thumb.
Then you get into a small argument with them and they say one thing that completely reminds you of all the backlog of hatred you had for that person, and thanks to the firepower stored in your backlog it sparks then goes boom.
These kinds of explosive events incur a lot of casualties. Some may be directly related, some might be indirectly or completely unrelated. Take the forced deportation of grad students, for example. Of course it impacts the student themselves, but it impacts the families of the students who jumped through a lot of hoops to be able to afford their family member to study abroad in America.
I also saw online photos of notes from gardeners in California. They don’t feel safe to work on lawns out in the public so they need to take a break from work. They don’t get paid, the homes don’t get gardening. The homeowner may not be a target of the ICE deportations at all, but they get impacted nevertheless.
Then we have more violent impacts like people getting killed through air strikes or people getting run over by cars in protests. Lawmakers getting killed. These are all results that we observe today, but they have been growing in the past.
But these are not reasons to feel defeated. Strawberries take their time to ripen, so does violence. What can also take their time to ripen is our ability to act for the good. I’ve talked a lot recently about de-escalating preemptively and talking to the people you don’t see eye to eye with.
The people we widely classify as “opponents” are actually in different ranges. Some people might mistakenly think they’re of a certain side, but in actuality they might not be. Some might be so extremely off to the end, it will realistically be impossible for them to change their mind. We don’t need to be talking to everyone; we can talk with the people who we can have a conversation with. More about that in my podcast episode here.
Loving in an era of hatred
If you’ve been wanting to get some more Buddhist concepts from me, this episode is a must watch in these times.
Recently I’ve been able to give a lot to many causes that are of importance in the current times. While the LA fires have moved on from the worldwide spotlight, the people still without a home can’t move on. It’s nice to be able to donate to rebuilding homes for the people who can’t due to systemic disadvantages such as cancelled homeowners’ insurance policies and loopholes in coverage for assistance.
The people in Gaza are without network, but they need network to do daily tasks such as attending school, communicating with their loved ones, catching up with the rest of the world, and such. It’s nice to be able to buy carrier-agnostic eSims for people so they can stay connected to the world.
Big news that get the worldwide spotlight tend to take the focus away from countries without power, but that doesn’t mean the people in that country don’t suffer. It’s nice to be able to contribute to my Buddhist order in their rebuilding efforts in Syria, Burma, and Pakistan.
But all of this is possible because I’ve spent time to hone my skills in making money. The inspiration for all of my efforts is watching my sister fundraise for the Lahaina fire relief. She raised $99,427 at the time and I remember being in awe of that ability to raise funds.
She did it through the means of providing people classes, workshops, and coaching to people. This is the important nuance: without the bigger intention of raising money for a cause, what she did is just plain old marketing her business and selling products. Marketing and sales get a bad rep because they feel so icky, and the precise reason for that is it’s not connected to your bigger vision of WHY you’re doing your business.
Here’s what it looks like from your perspective and others’ perspective when you’re not aligned with your why.
When you’re not connected to your inner vision or path, you don’t really understand why you make offers and operate your business. It’s just based on how you feel at the moment and feels more like a chore the moment you lose the inspiration. This is how most products that don’t sell fall into that pattern. I know this because I used to create and sell like this.
I want to make money because, of course, I want to fund my life. I don’t need a TON of money to do that. But I do need a ton of money to make a meaningful impact to causes I care about. Such as:
The spiritual liberation of Hawai’i as a sovereign land
Introducing equality and justice to underprivileged areas of the world with strong cultural enforcement of inequality and injustice
Animal care for all animals; pets, cattle, and wildlife
Being able to reach out to and influence more minds around inner peace so we preemptively stop the cycle of violence and anger
My personal needs can wait for my inspiration. But the children who are denied education because they are of a certain class, the people getting displaced from their home island, animals getting euthanized due to lack of shelter space, they cannot afford to wait for my inspiration.
So when I can’t rely on my inspiration, I rely on my love for them. Here’s what it looks like when you are connected to your path:
You will always have something to create, something to sell, something to give to others so that you can work towards your bigger goals that positively impact humanity.
This skill will take time and effort to develop. With or without my help, with or without your development of this skill to create and offer things that SELL, life will go on and more events will take place on planet Earth. As you look back from 2026 as you’re donating thousands of dollars to a cause you care about, wouldn’t you be really glad you learned this skill?
From this point on, regardless of what happens on this Earth — you have the power to give relief to those who suffer. Isn’t that a very powerful place of mind to operate from?
